Deaf Couple Wants Deaf Baby

Interesting video...

A Deaf couple wants to use IVF to guarantee a Deaf baby.

I can totally understand wanting your child to be like you - but using embryo screening seems a little extreme to me.

Thoughts?

I guess from my perspective, I wouldn't use IVF to screen to NOT have a deaf baby - so I really don't understand using it to guarantee a deaf baby.

Interesting.

I received a threatening email last week about how implanting Rhyan is killing the deaf culture and I will be punished. So this blog came at a time when nothing would surprise me.

My opinion has always been, deaf or hearing, I wanted the child God chose specifically for me.

Ugh, Chuck sent this to me early today, and I was just floored. I have two main issues, and they are a bit conflicting, and I won't go into it all the way. My main issue is as a Catholic, I have a MAJOR problem with screening embryos period. And my faith guides me to believe, similarly to Courtney, that I want the child God chose specifically for me. A part of me sees this as discriminating against the hearing. But, what do I know...I understand wanting to have a child that is like you, etc. But isn't this couple getting a little too close to playing God?

I completely agree with Jennifer/Cary's mom. It's the Preschool adage: You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit ( to WAY oversimplify :) I think we wind up with the kids we have for a reason.

It sounds pretty creepy in my opinion. I met (and signed with!) a deaf woman at the library today and her daughter (hearing) is Ethan's age. I thought it was interesting that we had babies at the same time in the same hospital and I got the deaf child while she got the hearing child. And we both got the perfect children for our families.

Love the new pics of Erin! I'll bet she gets lots of compliments on her hair :-)

Oh my goodness. I agree with everyone's comments. We shouldn't try to play "God." In fact, a large percentage of deaf children are born to hearing parents.

Also, there will always be a need for the deaf culture. . .they don't need to worry so much about it.

Kiss your cutie pie for me!

Frankly speaking, this is not weird or interesting, it is simply sick :-( And what shall they do if the screening shows the baby is not deaf? Abort the pregnancy, because the child is healthy?!

Keeping up the deaf culture is nice and all that, but what I do not understand is, why cannot they rear up a child who can hear, knowing and liking and maintaining that culture? Let's put it this way: I am a Hungarian, but lived in the US and it was intereseting and fun to get to know a different culture. And spread the word about it when I got home...

Now, I'm a hearing person, and do not have anyone deaf/HOH around me, so if I got this totally wrong and hurt anyone's feelings, please do excuse me, it was not my intension...

Mooney, Toes is half Hungarian! :)

Dad to Toes' parents' came to the US in the 1950s.

They should adopt a baby that's already deaf.

It's a small world, then, Mom to Toes :-) Does your husband speak Hungarian, or as I guess he was born in the US, he might not learnt it... it would be a nice second language choice for Erin, when the time comes ;-)))

I am not sure what to think about it.

It would be wrong of me, I guess to assume what it's like to be in there shoes. Non the less we are all very different and who am I to judge.

I think its terrible to purposely cause a child to have a DISABILITY!! Whats wrong with these sick people?? And if there is a doctor in this world that would do this should be stripped of his license. My grandson is deaf and getting ready to go through the cochlear implant surgery. If you are a truly good loving parent you would want the BEST for your child, you would NEVER purposely want to put them through having to live with a disability no matter what kind.

I think it is excessive, but I don't have a problem with it. Lots of people do the same thing screening for other things. Why not? Who does it hurt? They are more than capable of communicating and understanding and raising the child.
